The Grote Zaal is a beautifully decorated auditorium with a permanent theatre layout and a large podium. The dressing rooms and green room are behind the hall.
Sculptures by W.A. Retera
The side panels on both sides of the roof structure above the wall each carry six sculptured figures. Combined, they represent the twelve trades. On the one side of the hall: science, didactics, mathematics, grammar, astronomy and marine science. On the other side: fine arts, music, geometry, medicine, eloquence and trade.
Triptych of Paulides
Above the entrance of the Grote Zaal in the Marble Hall is a mural by H. Paulides. The triptych symbolises the cooperation between the East and the West according to the colonial principles at the time. Work in the West shows two figures with a hammer among symbols of trade and industry. For the East, the strong dependency on nature is emphasised by showing a young boy getting on the back of a buffalo. The cooperation is illustrated by a western and eastern figure discussing an irrigation plan. The image clearly shows how superior the figures believed their own thoughts were: the western systematic way of thinking has a positive influence on the eastern way of living.
