A source from 1966 states that the wood samples originate from 48 countries, almost all of them in the tropics. While a source from 1971 shows that there were 30,000 samples and 10,000 tropical wood types on display. In 2006, the Indian "wood library" of the KIT was transferred to the National Herbarium Nederland (NHN) in Leiden. The significant collection of wood samples has been accrued since 1913 for research in the field of tropical forestry and the use of tropical wood types. The transfer took place on 25 January 2006 during a short ceremony at the University of Leiden. Since then, all double samples have been kept by the Royal Tropical Institute. These double samples can be found in the Houtkabinet, a beautiful room with an antique cabinet containing all wood samples in the form of old books.
